Debunk the Funk
Real name: Dan Wilson
Molecular biologist with a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University who produces YouTube videos and a podcast focused on vaccine-related claims. Works as a senior associate scientist at Janssen.
Biography
Dan Wilson is an American molecular biologist and science communicator who holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from Carnegie Mellon University, where his doctoral research focused on ribosome biogenesis—the mechanisms by which cells construct and quality-check the ribosome complexes essential to all protein synthesis. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology from Clarion University and subsequently joined Janssen, the pharmaceutical arm of Johnson & Johnson, as a senior associate scientist. In January 2020, as he was completing his PhD, Wilson created his YouTube channel and podcast Debunk the Funk with the specific goal of countering the anti-vaccination content creators he had become familiar with, beginning with Del Bigtree.
Wilson's technical background gives his debunking work an authority that is rare in the anti-vaccination space. He can engage directly with molecular mechanisms—the structure of mRNA, the function of spike proteins, the processes of immune response—in ways that expose the scientific errors in anti-vaccine claims at the level of the underlying biology. His meticulous, evidence-grounded approach earned him praise from pediatric immunologist Paul Offit, who specifically highlighted Wilson's point-by-point rebuttal of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s claims on the Joe Rogan Experience as a model takedown of "dangerous misleading information." Science writer Matthew Remski described Wilson's approach as "clear, respectful, meticulous with evidence and clearly devoted to the common good."
Wilson has been invited to speak on vaccine advocacy at major scientific institutions, including North Dakota State University, and has been featured in Skeptical Inquirer for his work on moving from conspiracy thinking to evidence-based analysis. His own background includes a period of prior susceptibility to misinformation, which he has spoken about publicly—an experience that informs his patient, non-condescending approach to audiences who are uncertain or skeptical about vaccines. He represents a model of scientist-as-communicator that uses professional expertise directly in service of public health.
