Biography

Dianna Cowern, known online as Physics Girl, is an MIT-trained physicist and science communicator whose YouTube channel has been introducing the wonders of physics to broad audiences since 2011. After completing her physics degree at MIT—where she researched dark matter under Professor Jocelyn Monroe—she worked as a research fellow at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before pivoting to science education. Her channel quickly gained recognition for making counterintuitive physics phenomena approachable and exciting without sacrificing accuracy.

Cowern won the top prize in the Flame Challenge from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science in 2014, a Webby Award for Best Web Personality in 2018, and was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 for Education in 2019. Her work has been praised for bridging the gap between professional science and public engagement, and she has collaborated with PBS Digital Studios to extend her reach further into formal education contexts.

In recent years, Cowern faced a significant health challenge after contracting a post-viral illness that left her bedridden for extended periods, effectively pausing her channel. Her 2026 return to YouTube after more than two years away was widely celebrated by the science communication community, underscoring the personal resilience that characterises her public work as much as her scientific credentials.
