Biography
Dr. Mehmet Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon who became one of America's most famous television personalities through his syndicated show "The Dr. Oz Show." Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960 to Turkish immigrant parents, Oz completed medical training at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania before joining Columbia University's surgical faculty, where he developed a legitimate reputation in cardiovascular surgery.
His television career began as a regular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where his telegenic presence and ability to translate complex medical concepts for general audiences made him a breakout star. In 2009, he launched his own daily syndicated program, which became one of the most-watched daytime shows in America with over four million daily viewers at its peak.
Despite his legitimate medical credentials, Oz's show became notorious for promoting unproven supplements, dubious dietary advice, and outright pseudoscience. A 2014 study published in the British Medical Journal found that fewer than half of his recommendations had any supporting evidence, and many actively contradicted mainstream medical consensus. The US Senate called him before a committee to answer for promoting fraudulent weight-loss products, where Senator Claire McCaskill famously told him: "The scientific community is almost monolithically against you."
Oz ran unsuccessfully for US Senate in Pennsylvania in 2022, a campaign in which his medical credibility became a central issue. His time as a television personality is widely considered to have done significant harm to public health literacy, particularly regarding supplements and alternative medicine.
