John Edward
aka John Edward McGee Jr., Johnny Edward
American television personality and author who claims to communicate with the deceased on behalf of audience members. Hosted the popular TV show Crossing Over with John Edward. Skeptical investigators, including James Randi and Dateline NBC, have attributed his apparent readings to cold and hot reading techniques, while supporters maintain his abilities are genuine.
Biography
John Edward McGee Jr. was born October 19, 1969, in Glen Cove, New York. He claims to have developed mediumistic abilities as a teenager and published his first book, One Last Time, in 1998. His national profile exploded in 2000 when the Sci-Fi Channel launched Crossing Over with John Edward, which ran through 2004 and was later syndicated. The show depicted Edward delivering messages from deceased relatives to audience members, with editing that excluded the many incorrect guesses.
Multiple investigations revealed the mechanics behind his apparent hits. A Dateline NBC undercover investigation found him using information gathered by production staff from audience members prior to taping, then presenting it as supernatural revelation during the actual session. Skeptic James Randi analyzed a recorded segment and found only 3 of 23 statements were confirmed, and all were trivially general. An analysis published by the Center for Inquiry found that Edward scored no better than chance when baseline rates of demographically likely statements were accounted for.
Critics note that Edward pivoted from calling himself a 'psychic' to 'psychic medium' after discovering audiences were more receptive when he claimed to contact deceased relatives rather than predict future events. This shift allowed him to target the bereaved — a uniquely emotionally vulnerable population. He has collaborated with figures like Dr. Oz, expanding his reach into health-adjacent media.
Edward continues to perform live and virtual readings and maintains an active media presence. He charges hundreds of dollars for private readings. Psychologists and grief counselors have expressed concern that false beliefs in ongoing contact with the dead can impede healthy grief processing and encourage financial exploitation of mourners.

Claims & Debunking
“Communicates with deceased individuals and relays specific messages to living relatives”UNPROVEN
No controlled study has ever validated mediumship claims. Analysis of Edward's taped sessions shows high rates of incorrect 'hits' and use of classic cold-reading techniques such as Barnum statements, fishing, and shotgunning.
“Information he receives during readings comes from the deceased, not from prior research”DEBUNKED
Dateline NBC documented Edward using information obtained from a cameraman who had spoken with an audience member before taping. James Randi analyzed a session and found only 3 of 23 statements correct, all trivial.
“Can provide health-related information from deceased relatives that living family members should act on”UNPROVEN
Health guidance attributed to the dead has no evidential basis. Encouraging people to act on such 'messages' for medical decisions is dangerous and exploits a vulnerable emotional state.
